For the second time in five days, Cerritos College sophomore catcher Briana Lopez (Norwalk HS) hit a pair of home runs and drove in six runs in a game. She accomplished the feat last Friday against Citrus College and followed that with a pair of three-run home runs in the Falcons 11-1, 5-inning South Coast Conference South Division victory over Compton College at Nancy Kelly Field on Tuesday. Winners of four games in a row, Cerritos will now take host El Camino College at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Lopez, who now shares the state lead with 14 home runs this season, clubbed her first three-run blast in the bottom of the first inning and then closed out the game with a three-run bomb in the bottom of the fifth inning. In between those at-bats, Lopez singled and drew a walk and improved her batting average to .432.
Cerritos scored eight of their runs in the first inning, with fresman field baseman Keira Bolinas (Torrance HS) getting things started with a bases loaded, two-run double, which were followed by run-scoring ground outs by both freshman third baseman Kayla Hernandez (Santa Fe HS) and freshman designated player Deja Sendejas (El Rancho HS). The inning continued with freshman outfielder Kayla Aros (Torrance HS) dropping a double in to center field and then scoring on a base hit down the first base line by sophomore second baseman Rain Vega (La Mirada HS). After sophomore outfielder Emma Wolff (Mayfair HS) drew a walk, Lopez hit her first three-run home run of the day.
The offensive output was more than enough for freshman pitcher Allisyn Udell (Whittier Christian HS), who threw a complete game and allowed four hits. Her only blemish was a solo home run in the fourth inning by Riah Nunley.
The game was ended by the eight-run mercy rule in the bottom of the fifth inning after freshman outfielder Melissa Corona (Gahr HS) drew a walk and Wolff was hit by a pitch. That set the table for Lopez and her 14th home run of the season.
