Leading, 4-3 through the first five innings, the Cerritos College softball team saw host Ventura College score four times in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 7-5 decision on Monday. The loss by the Falcons dropped them to 19-14 overall, while the team will play a rain make-up game on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. when they host Pasadena City College.
With the Pirates leading 2-0 heading into the top of the fourth inning, Cerritos was able to push four runs across the plate for their only lead of the day. Freshman first baseman Keirra Bolinas (Torrance HS) singled with one out and came home on a double by freshman third baseman Kayla Hernandez (Santa Fe HS). Freshman catcher Deja Sendejas (El Rancho HS) added a double and after sophomore second baseman Rain Vega (La Mirada HS) walked with two outs, that loaded the bases. Sophomore outfielder Emma Wolff (Mayfair HS) followed with a two-run single, with sophomore designated player Briana Lopez (Norwalk HS) finishing off the scoring with a run-scoring single.
Freshman pitcher Allisyn Udell (Whittier Christian HS) had just worked out of a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Pirates came up with the big hit that put them in front for good. With the game tied at 4-4, Kayla Garcia clubbed a three-run home run with two outs to put Ventura in the lead, 7-4.
Cerritos tried to make a comeback in the seventh inning and pushed a run across the plate, but Bolinas and Hernandez could not tie the game with runners on first and second when the game ended.
