Wrestling: Falcons close out conference with a win

With their 30-13 Southwest Conference win over host Santa Ana College on Wednesday, the Cerritos College wrestling team wrapped up their first  conference title since 2010. The Falcons (13-1, 4-0), ranked #1 in the state, will take a week off before they travel to Idaho and Washington for a pair of tournaments. On November 21, they will compete in the Northern Idaho Duals and follow that the next day by competing in the Spokane Tournament.

125 Pounds – Gary Howe (CER) pinned Eliseo Medina (SAC), 4:23
Gary Howe got the first points of the match on a technical violation by Eliseo Medina before going up 3-0 on a takedown. Medina quickly escaped to make the score 3-1 but Howe went up 5-1 on another takedown before the first period ended. Howe would add three more points on a near-fall in the first minute of the second period before getting two more on another near-fall to go up 10-1. Howe would go on to win the match by fall at 4:23.
133 Pounds – Dustin Kirk (CER) def. Ronnie Collister (SAC), 4-0
Neither SAC's Ronnie Collister or Cerritos' Dustin Kirk scored in the first period of their match, however Kirk escaped quickly in the second to go up 1-0. Kirk extended his lead to 3-0 with a takedown and would take that lead into the third. That would wrap up the scoring for the match as Kirk took a 4-0 win, getting an extra point with riding time.
141 Pounds – Alejandro Collazo (SAC) pinned Luis Pacheco (CER), 2:20
Alejandro Collazo got a takedown just inside one minute to open his match with Luis Pacheco before winning his match with a fall at 2:20.
149 Pounds – Joaquin Collister (SAC) def. Eric Ambriz (CER), 13-3
Joaquin Collister went up 3-0 in the first minute of his match with Eric Ambriz on an escape and a takedown before taking a 4-0 lead into the second with the addition of a point on stalling. With just three seconds left in the second, Collister would get two points on a near-fall to take a 6-0 lead into the third. Collister opened the third with an escape just seconds in before getting a takedown to go up 9-0. Looking for more points, Collister conceded an escape but was quickly the victim of a takedown as Ambriz cut the lead to 9-3. Collister got those points back with an escape and takedown of his own to up 12-3. Collister would get one more point on riding time to get a 13-3 victory while giving the Dons their first lead of the match at 10-9.
157 Pounds – Antonio McKee (CER) def. Richard Miranda (SAC), 5-4
Richard Miranda got the first points of his match when Antonio McKee was called for a technical violation but McKee would get that point back, plus one more, with a takedown with 34 seconds remaining in the first. Miranda would get the only points of the second when he took a 3-2 lead with a reversal with 30 seconds left. McKee would reclaim the lead at 4-3 just moments into the third with a reversal before Miranda tied the match at 4-4 with an escape. But McKee would get the 5-4 victory by virtue of riding time, putting Cerritos back on top 12-10 overall.
 
165 Pounds – Ruben Avila (CER) def. Eric Roberts (SAC), 9-8
There was little action at 157 pounds until the final 15 seconds when Eric Roberts got a takedown before Ruben Avila scored five points on a reversal and a near-fall to take a 5-2 lead into the second period. Roberts got one point back with an escape late in the second, giving Avila a 5-3 lead going into the third. Avila extended his lead to 7-3 just 10 seconds in with a reversal before Roberts escaped, making the score 7-4.  Roberts pulled within one point at 7-6 with a takedown before conceding an escape that gave Avila an 8-6 lead. Roberts came back to tie the match at 8-8 with a late takedown but Avila got the win with riding time.
174 Pounds – Micah Macias (SAC) def. Dylan Clarke (CER), 6-1
Micah Macias opened with a takedown of Dylan Clarke to go up 2-0 before riding his opponent through to the end of the period. Macias would escape and add a takedown in the second to go up 5-0 before conceding a point to open the third period. Macias would get one more point via riding time to take the 6-1 victory and pull the Dons within two at 15-13.
184 Pounds – Max Kumashiro (CER) pinned Raul Hernandez (SAC), 1:48
Max Kumashiro quickly extended Cerritos' lead to 21-13 when he took down Raul Hernandez before ending the match with a fall at 1:48.
197 Pounds – Oscar Martinez (CER) def. Jonathan Fraser (SAC), 6-4
Oscar Martinez used a takedown 50 seconds in to take a 2-0 lead over Jonathan Fraser before Fraser tied the match at 2-2 with a reversal. Martinez went back on top 3-2 with an escape for the final points of the first period. Fraser would tie the match at 3-3 just seven seconds into the second period, which would prove to be the only points of the second period. Martinez broke the scoreless run with an escape to open the third while also taking a 4-3 lead. Martinez would extend his lead to 6-3 with a takedown with 1:03 remaining before Fraser escaped less than 20 seconds later. However, Fraser was unable to get the equalizing takedown he was after as Martinez won 6-4.
 
HWT – Jesse Gomez (CER) pinned Abraham Aguilar (SAC), 2:32
With the match wrapped up for Cerritos, Jesse Gomez opened the final match with a takedown of Abraham Aguilar as the only points in the first period. Gomez would be awarded a point on stalling in the second, giving him a 3-0 lead heading into the third. Gomez would escape to open the third before scoring a takedown to go up 6-0 before ending the match with a fall with just 28 seconds remaining.
