Competing in their first official match of the season, the Cerritos College women's soccer team scored 11 times in defeating host Oxnard College, 11-0 on Tuesday. The Falcons, who are the defending National Champions and five-time defending CCCAA State Champions, scored eight of their goals in the second half against the Condors. The team will play their home opener next Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. when they welcome San Diego Miramar College.
A taste of the events for the day occurred in the first minute of the game when the Falcons got on the scoreboard. Sophomore Itzel Ballesteros (Maywood Academy HS) found freshman Mia Ramirez (Torrance HS), who scored her first collegiate goal. Ramirez added her second goal of the game in the 20th minute when sophomore Maria Hernandez (Sierra Vista HS) sent a through pass that directly led to a successful goal. It would be a low scoring first half for the Falcons, who added their third goal in the 32nd minute when freshman Alixzandra Evans (Batavia, IL HS) spotted sophomore Yvonne Martinez (Huntington Beach HS/Dominican University) from 30 yards out, who drilled the ball into the back of the net.
In the second half, the deeper and fresher Falcons wore down the Condors and scored eight more times to easily put the game out of reach. In the span of 15 minutes, Cerritos scored five times, with Ramirez adding a goal and two assists to cap off an eight-point game. More freshmen got their first taste of scoring, as Mayela Medina (Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy HS) posted a pair of goals, while Elizabeth Mendez (Long Beach Millikan HS), Sophie Saouma (Esperanza HS) and Stephanie Nava (Shadow Ridge, NV HS) all tallied a goal. Sophomore Brittany Reyes (Santa Fe HS/Cal State Northridge) scored the final two goals of the game just one minute apart.
The freshman duo of Deisy Rodriguez (Katella HS) and Andrea Diaz (Cerritos HS) split time in goal, with the two sharing the shutout. Only Diaz was required to make a save.
