On Friday, the Cerritos College women's soccer team improved to 4-0-1 on the season after a 1-0 non-conference win at Los Angeles Pierce College. The Falcons, who are the defending National Champions and five-time CCCAA State Champions, will be hosting powerful Fresno City College at 4:00 p.m. next Wednesday. Last season, the Rams ended the Falcons 50-match unbeaten streak that extended over two seasons. Since the loss, Cerritos has gone 21-0-2, while Fresno City will enter the game 6-0-0 with six shutouts this year.
In the win over the Brahmas, the Falcons were held scoreless in the first half, but finally broke through early in the second half. In the 50th minute, freshman defender Brianna Yepez (Paramount HS) stole the ball from the defender just above the 18-yard box and converted that into her first goal of the season.
That would be all the offense necessary, as the Cerritos defense held true, while freshman goalkeeper Andrea Diaz (Ceritos HS) made her first start of the season and posted a shutout with three saves. The team played without its normal starting goalkeeper, Deisy Rodriguez (Katella HS), while several regular starters came off the bench, which allowed others to get more playing time.
The Falcons still managed 18 shots (15 on goal), with freshman Mia Ramirez (Torrance HS) leading the way with five shots on goal, with sophomore Brittany Reyes (Santa Fe HS/Cal State Northridge) adding three shots on goal.
