Itzel Ballesteros ties school record with six assists

On six of their seven goals against Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday, there was one common denominator for the Cerritos College women's soccer team. That would be sophomore Itzel Ballesteros (Maywood Academy HS), who tied the school record with six assists on the day. She ties the mark set by Carolina Jaramillo during the 2015 season. The Falcons (8-1-1, 3-0-0) will host Long Beach City College on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. with first place in the South Coast Conference South Division on the line.

In the first half, Ballesteros had helpers on the team's two goals. The first one came in the 19th minute when Ballesteros won the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and fed freshman Mayela Medina (Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy HS), who took on one Seahawks defender before firing off a shot that found the back of the net. In the 32nd minute, it was freshman Alixzandra Evans (Batavia, IL HS) who was the recipient of a Ballesteros pass after she pushed the ball down the sideline. A crossing pass was finished with a one-timer for a goal.

Four of the six assists were set up the same way, with Ballesteros using her speed on the outside to put the team in a scoring position. That play also resulted in a pair of second half goals for sophomore Brittany Reyes (Santa Fe HS/Cal State Northridge) with freshman Ana Andrade (Fremont HS) also scoring. The final goal of the day, which was scored by sophomore Maria Hernandez (Sierra Vista HS), came in the 80th minute when Ballesteros slipped a pass behind the LA Harbor defense, with Hernandez scoring on a breakaway.

Freshman Sophie Saouma (Esperanza HS) scored the lone goal that was not assisted by Ballesteros. On that goal, which came in the 76th minute, she grabbed an attempted clearing pass from the defense and scored from inside the 18-yard box. The six helpers by Ballesteros gives her a state-leading 16 on the season and puts her tied for eighth in the state with 28 points.

Freshmen goalkeepers Deisy Rodriguez (Katella HS) and Andrea Diaz (Cerritos HS) were not asked to make any saves on the day. Rodriguez played the first 45 minutes and earned the win to improve her record to 6-0-1 on the season.
