With just three regular season games left for the Cerritos College women's soccer team, they have established roles for their players. The team's top two goal scorers each picked up two tallies on Friday, as the Falcons shut out host Compton College, 6-0 for their 11th victory in a row. The team is now 15-1-1 overall and 5-0-0 in South Coast Conference South Division play and will host Los Angeles Harbor College at 3:00 p.m. next Tuesday.
In the first half of the win, sophomore Itzel Ballesteros (Maywood Academy HS) picked up two of the team's goals to give her 11 on the season, while freshman Mia Ramirez (Torrance HS) improved her team-leading goal tally to 19 on the year with two of the team's three second half goals. Sophomore Brittany Reyes (Santa Fe HS/Cal State Northridge) scored early in the second half to put her at double-digits with 10 goals this year.
Ballesteros got the scoring started in the 14th minute when freshman Mayela Medina (Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy HS) won the ball at midfield and sent the ball to the left side. Running on the play, Ballesteros dribbled past one defender, which left her in front of the goalkeeper and she scored inside the far post. The Falcons then scored twice in 1:04 with freshman Gisselle Jimenez (Long Beach Millikan HS) making a 2-0 lead when Ramirez got the play started when she took the first shot. After the rebound came back to her, she found Jimenez, who was able to volley the ball into the net. Ballesteros scored her second goal of the half in the next minute and Cerritos was holding a 3-0 advantage.
The offense continued to produce in the second half, as Reyes scored in the first five minutes on a play when Medina controlled the ball at the top of the box. She connected with Reyes, who drilled a shot into the far side inside the post. Ramirez picked up her first goal of the half five minutes later, and then capped off the scoring in the 68th minute.
On the day, Cerritos took 28 shots with 12 of them on goal, while limiting Compton to just one shot on goal in the first half that was turned away by freshman goalkeeper Deisy Rodriguez (Katella HS). Freshman Andrea Diaz (Cerritos HS) came on in the second half and was not required to make a save.
