Matching their season high in goals scored, the Cerritos College women's soccer team posted a 6-0 South Coast Conference win over visiting El Camino College on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons (11-4-2, 4-1-0), who have three regular season games remaining, are currently in second place in conference play, while they are third in Southern California in power points. The team will travel to Compton College for a 4:00 p.m. conference game on Friday.
Cerritos scored three times in each half, with sophomore Valeria Corrilo (Dominguez HS) leading the team with two goals and two assists, despite being triple-teamed at times. The Falcons opened the scoring in the 10th minute when sophomore Gabriela Jimenez (Los Angeles Jordan HS) was able to head a corner kick from freshman Aubree Stevens (Pacifica HS) past Warriors goalkeeper Desiree Jeanes. With ECC goalkeeper Kelly Gallagher forced to miss the game due to a red card in their previous match, Jeanes was seeing her first action of the season in goal. Cerritos was able to attack their defense and took 27 shots, with 16 of them on goal.
Corrilo scored her first goal of the game just five minutes later when she grabbed a loose ball in front of a wide open Warriors net and easily scored. Her second goal of the game came in the 22nd minute when freshman Alyssa Amaro (Katella HS) stole the ball in the El Camino zone, and sent a lead pass to Corrilo, who picked up her fourth goal of the season.
The second half was more of the same, as the Falcons held possession of the ball for 90% of the game, and they quickly made it a 4-0 score. Corrilo brought the ball into El Camino territory, left a pass for freshman Lucia Yanez (El Rancho HS), who scored from 20 yards out. Another nice pass from Corrilo enabled Cerritos to extend their lead to 5-0 in the 66th minute, with sophomore Nia Thompson (Kennedy HS/Alabama A&M University) the beneficiary. Faced with only Jeanes to beat, Thompson scored into an unguarded portion of the net for her first of two goals on the day.
The final goal came in the 85th minute, as freshman Kylie Yamamoto (La Habra HS) chipped a pass through two defenders to Thompson, and she found the back of the net for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Freshman Liza Cisneros (Bellflower HS) didn't see a single shot in the game and recorded her eight win and third shutout.
