W. Track & Field: Falcons excel at multiple meets

Over the weekend, the Cerritos College women's track and field team competed in multiple meets and excelled at each of them. The Falcons had the top three finishers at the Mt. SAC Combined Events Challenge and followed that up by competing in the Crosstown Relays in both field and running events. This Saturday, the school will host the Cerritos Invitational.

Mt. SAC Combined Events Challenge: Leading the way for the Falcons was sophomore Jordan Agnew (Los Alamitos HS/Cal State Long Beach), who easily outscored the field with her 4270 points. She won by over 400 points, with freshman Brandy Navarro taking second place with 3864 points and sophomore Raiven Ellis (California HS) taking third place with 3862 points. Agnew scored the most points in four of the seven events and had the second most in two others. She earned 809 points with a time of 15.25 in the 100-meter hurdles, while her long jump of 5.11 meters got her 589 points and she received 538 points for a triple jump that went 33.25 meters. Navarro performed well in the 100 meters (15.96, 719 points), high jump (1.56 meters, 689 points) and had the fastest 200 meters (25.70) to collect 824 points that ended the first day.

Crosstown Relays - Field Events: Cerritos won a pair of events, as freshman Shukura Tyler (Warren HS) tied for first place in the long jump at 4.84 meters, while sophomore Ariel Thomas (Warren HS) won the triple jump with a leap of 10.59 meters. Clearing the fifth best pole vault height in school history was freshman Erica Davis (Fountain Valley HS), as her 3.05 meters tied her for second place. Freshman Nikki Yanez (Downey HS) came in third place in the shot put (9.54 meters), discus (31.07 meters) and hammer (31.88 meters).

Crosstown Relays - Running Events: Six relay races resulted in the Falcons coming in first place on the day. In the four-mile relay, the team of Maria Orosco (Katella HS), Janet Salazar (Paramount HS), Stephanie Perea (Downey HS) and Stephanie Ruiz (Western HS) recorded a time of 22:43.39, while Tiarah McDaniel, Tyler, Shawna Lino (Bellflower HS) and Lauryn Ballard (Narbonne HS) sprinted their way to the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:45.43. In the 3200-meter relay, Jocelyn Orozco (Downey HS), Ryanne Bailey (Foothill, NV HS), Jordyn Overby (Long Beach Wilson HS) and Ariel Melendez won with a time of 9:50.72, with Jenai Vickers (Lakewood HS), Sarah Baker (Paramount HS), Citlaly Fabela (La Serna HS) and Davis were clocked in 1:53.18 to win the 800-meter sprint medley.
