Led by sophomore decathlete Zach Munoz (La Mirada HS/Cal State Fullerton), who came in second place in the decathlon, the Cerritos College men's track and field team placed 16th at the CCCAA State Championships. Competing at American River College in Sacramento over the weekend, the Falcons finished with 18 team points, which put them in 16th place overall.
Sitting in fifth place after the first day, Munoz made up ground on some with his 110-meter HH time of 16.44, which netted him 684 points. But when eventual third place finisher Elisha Edwards of Moorpark failed to score any points in the discus, Munoz put himself in place to move up the standings. Although he had no chance to win the state championship, he posted a time of 5:04.37 in the 1500 meters, which earned him enough points to hold off Edwards, who wound up 17 points behind Munoz.
In the 400-meter IH, sophomore Jaydon Logan (Artesia HS) posted a fourth place time in 53.39, while sophomore jumper Blair Robinson (Kennedy HS) earned points in two events. After coming in eighth place in the long jump on the first day, he took seventh place in the triple jump with a distance of 14.51 meters. Joining him in the event was sophomore Stacy Chukwumezie (Downey HS), who finished in ninth place with a leap of 14.25 meters.
In the final event of the state championships, the quartet of Jhamani Long (Cerritos HS), Jahmal King (Bellflower HS), Clay Green (Los Alamitos HS) and Logan finished in seventh place in the 4x400-meter relay. They posted a time of 3:16.37, as a cluster of four schools all crossed the finish line in less than a second. The Falcons other qualifier, freshman thrower Jorge Gonzalez (Ventura HS), placed 12th in the shot put with a distance of 12.48 meters.
