M. Basketball: Three straight wins earns team tournament title

After opening the season with four straight losses, the Cerritos College men's basketball team swept through three opponents to win the Grossmont Tournament. The Falcons (3-4) opened with a 70-50 win over the host Griffins, and followed with victories over Cuesta College (74-61) and then a 68-57 win over Southwester College in the finals. Cerritos will now travel to Glendale College for a 5:00 p.m. game on Friday.

Cerritos 68, Southwestern 57: In the championship game, sophomore guard Anthony Holliday (Norwalk HS) led all scorers with 20 points, while freshman guard Kevin Conrad (Buena Park HS) added 17 points and eight rebounds. The Falcons led 38-28 in the first half, but saw the Jaguars go on a 16-4 run to take a 44-42 lead with 11:21 remaining after a basket by Ivor Clayton. But Conrad led a 13-0 run over the next 4:22 with six points to put Cerritos up, 55-44 and they never looked back. Sophomore forward Marquise Washington (Westchester HS/Cypress College), who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, added 10 points while sophomore David Hall (Lynwood HS/Yavapai (AZ) CC) came off the bench to contribute nine points and eight rebounds in the win.

Cerritos 74, Cuesta 71: Washington led the Falcons with 24 points on 12-of-13 shooting and added a team-high nine rebounds against the Cougars. Cerritos turned an early 16-14 deficit in the first half into a 28-16 lead with Washington scoring eight straight points. The Falcons never trailed the rest of the way and led by as many as 17 points in the second half. Hall came off the bench to drain 5-of-8 baskets to finish with 16 points and seven rebounds, with Holliday (12 points, three rebounds) and Conrad (11 points, seven rebounds) also playing well. Sophomore Andrew Torres (Montebello HS/Humboldt State University) dished out a team-high four assists and scored seven points off the bench. Holliday was named to the All-Tournament team.

Cerritos 70, Grossmont 50: Cerritos opened the tournament with a dominate second half to pull away from the Griffins. The Falcons trailed 31-29 at intermission, but outscored their opponents, 41-19 in the final 20 miuntes, with Washington (15 points, five rebounds), Hall (12 points, three rebounds) and Conrad (10 points, four rebounds) leading the way. Freshman Terence Traylor (Dominguez HS) accounted for 12 points off the bench in a supportive role, while the duo of DeAnthony Roberts (Gahr HS/Cypress College) and Jordan Reise (Huntington Beach HS) both added seven points.
