M. Water Polo: Busy week starts with easy win

With the Cerritos College men's water polo team slated to play eight games in a span of five days, their 18-4 South Coast Conference win over Los Angeles Trade-Tech College was a welcome start. The Falcons (4-3, 2-0) will now play a pair of games at the Cal Lutheran Tournament on Thursday before heading south for the San Diego Mesa Tournament, with an 8:00 a.m. game against the Naval Academy at Downey High on Sunday serving as the finale.

Against the Beavers, Cerritos jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and held an 11-0 lead near the end of the first half. Several of the team's regular starters sat out the game, which allowed others to get involved in the scoring. By the end of the match, 11 different players scored, including freshman Alfredo De La Mora (Bell Gardens HS) the regular starting goalkeeper.

Sophomore Derek Klotzer (Downey HS) led the team with three goals, with Joshua Owens (Kennedy HS), Marlon Moreno (Virgen del Rosario, Venezuela HS), Cody Anderson (Valencia HS), Max Gomez (La Serna HS) and Andrew Javier (Cerritos HS) all scoring twice. Freshman David Lumbreras (Downey HS) recored three steals, with sophomore Albert Kim (Cerritos HS) dishing out three assists.

In goal, Joseph Owens (Kennedy HS) and Michael Asendorf (Sunny Hills HS) combined for eight saves and three steals in the win.
