In the middle of their busiest week of the season, the Cerritos College men's water polo team went out and won three of four games at the San Diego Mesa Tournament over the weekend. The Falcons (7-6) will close out a five-day span where they play eight games by hosting the Naval Academy at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday at Downey High. The team opened with a tough 13-10 overtime loss to Grossmont College, but responded with a convincing 17-9 win against Santa Monica College to end the first day. On Saturday, Cerritos handed the host Olympians a 15-6 loss and concluded the tournament with a 13-8 victory over Citrus College.

Doing everything within his power to help the team get a win, freshman goalie Alfredo De La Mora (Bell Gardens HS) recorded 20 saves against Grossmont. But turnovers hurt the Falcons, as they committed 18 of them, which helped the Griffins secure the victory. Sophomore Miguel Garcia (Montebello HS) led the team with four goals and four steals, with the trio of sophomore Albert Kim (Cerritos HS), along with freshman Eugene Lee (Hacienda Heights Wilson HS) and Marlon Moreno (Virgen del Rosario, Venezuela HS) all added a pair of goals, with sophomore TJ Tijerina (Bell Gardens HS) also posting four steals.

A balanced attack led the way for the team in their win over Santa Monica, as 10 different players scored, with Lee, Tijerina and freshman Michael Hanna (Cerritos HS) all scoring three goals. Garcia, who scored once, dished out four assists. De La Mora recorded 13 saves in his time in the net, with freshman Michael Asendorf (Sunny Hills HS) stepping in to make five saves.

On the second day of the tournament, Garcia (three goals, three assists, three steals) led the team in the win over SD Mesa, while freshman Peter Roldan (Downey HS) posted a season-high three goals. Moreno helped anchor the defense with three steals, as did freshman Matthew Skinas (La Serna HS), with De La Mora making eight saves. Lee and Garcia each scored four times in the win over Citrus, with Moreno and Kim each recording three steals.
