Playing in a pair of games at the Irvine Valley Tournament over the weekend, the Cerritos College women's basketball team was defeated in both games. The Falcons (4-6) opened with a tough 74-30 loss at the hands of the host Lasers and followed up by getting beat by Rio Hondo College, 76-30. The team will host Golden West College at 5:00 p.m. on December 18 in their next game.
Cerritos vs. Irvine Valley: Staying close to the Lasers after the first quarter, the Falcons went cold in the second quarter. They converted just 1-for-14 shots from the field, while going 0-for-7 from three-point range. Cerritos also committed seven turnovers to see a 19-12 deficit after the first 10 minutes turn into an insurmountable 35-14 game at intermission. Their shooting struggles continued throughout the game and the team ended up connecting on just 21% (12-for-57) of their shots. Freshman Nicole Lizzaraga (Cantwell Sacred Heart HS) came off the bench to lead the team with nine points and added four rebounds, with sophomore Mariah Lora (Warren HS) accounting for six points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Freshman Jordan Lewis (Downey HS) paced the team with six rebounds, with sophomore Sarah Hernandez (St. Paul HS) posting five points and four rebounds.
Cerritos vs. Rio Hondo: The Falcons inability to find their shooting touch once again hurt them in a lopsided loss. The team converted 31% of their shots in the first quarter, but could not gain any consistency for the rest of the game, as they went a combined 7-for-39 (18%) in the final three quarters. The Roadrunners were able to transition from the Cerritos missed shots and registered 24 fast break points, while 60 of their points came in the paint against the smaller Falcons. Hernandez would lead the team with 14 points and six rebounds, with freshman Precious Yerena (Downey HS) posting six points with four rebounds. No other Falcon player had more than three points in the game.
