W. Basketball: Fourth quarter lead holds up in win

On Friday, the Cerritos College women's basketball team was able to hold onto a fourth quarter lead and posted a 55-51 South Coast Conference South Division win over host Compton College. The Falcons (8-14, 1-3) will return home on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. divisional game against Los Angeles SOuthwest College. The win also snapped the team's six-game losing streak.

Early in the fourth quarter, sophomore guard Kayla Sta. Ana (St. Joseph HS) drained her lone three-pointer of the game to put Cerritos in front, 48-40. The Lady Tartars (8-14, 0-4) were able to scramble back and got to within 48-46 with 5:20 remaining in the game. Neither team could score on several possessions until Sta. Ana converted a layup with 3:35 remaining to make the score, 50-46. The dagger in the game was a Compton turnover that turned into a three-pointer from freshman Melanie Lopez (Legacy HS), which made the score, 53-46.

It was 53-51 with :15 seconds left after the Falcons went 0-for-3 with a turnover and two missed free throws, while Compton picked up five straight points. Sophomore Mariah Lora (Warren HS) was able to convert two of her final four free throws to secure the victory.

Sophomore Sarah Hernandez (St. Paul HS) led the Falcons with 12 points and added four rebounds and three steals, with freshman Jordan Lewis (Downey HS) accounting for eight points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists in a strong all-around game. Sta. Ana (seven points, three rebounds) and Lopez (six points, seven rebounds) also played well off the bench.
