For the third time in the last four seasons, the Cerritos College wrestling team placed second at the Southern California Regional Championships. Competing at Cuesta College on Saturday, the Falcons had four individual champions and qualified all 12 of their entries, with two advancing at 133 pounds and 149 pounds. It marks the first time in school history the program has qualified the maximum 12 wrestlers for the state championships. In each of the last seven seasons (there was no season in 2020 due to Covid-19), Cerritos has come in either first or second place at the SoCal Championships. The Falcons will serve as host of the CCCAA State Championships, which will take place next Friday and Saturday.

All 12 Cerritos wrestlers advanced to the CCCAA State Championships Defending state champion at 125 pounds, Jonathan Prata (Downey HS), was one of the four Falcons to win a SoCal Championship. Joining him were freshmen 157-pound Daniel Bracamontes (Villa Park HS), 165-pound Armando Murillo (Rowland HS) and 285-pound Jonovan Smith (Birmingham Charter HS). The SoCal Championships was just the second tournament of the season for Bracamontes.

Cerritos will also be sending sophomores Josh Mendoza (Warren HS) and Roland Dominguez (Downey HS) at 133 pounds after they finished in third and fourth places, respectively. Freshman Kimo Servino (Carson HS) qualifed at 141 pounds with his fifth place finish, with the freshmen duo of Felix Osorio (Santa Fe HS) and Caoilte Drury (Westminster HS) advancing at 149 pounds. Osorio reached the championship match, but had to settle for second place, with Drury coming in third place.

Freshman Stone Robledo (Villa Park HS) reached the finals of the 174-pound weight classification, but came up short in the championship match and settled for second place, with freshman 184-pound Joseph Rodriguez (Paramount HS) turning in a fourth place finish. At 197 pounds, freshman Justin Sawai (North Torrance HS) had to compete for the true sixth place in order to qualify and was able to do so.
