The Cerritos College volleyball team earned a pair of wins over the weekend at Allan Hancock College to improve their season record to 3-5. The Falcons, who announced they were forfeiting their season-opening win against Santa Ana College due to an ineligible player, will now open South Coast Conference play on Friday at 6:00 p.m. when they host Los Angeles Trade-Tech College. The team earned wins against the host Bulldogs (22-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-23) and College of the Desert (13-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-20) and have now won three matches in a row.

In both matches, Cerritos dropped the first game, but regrouped and went on to sweep the next three sets for the victory. In addition to the trio of freshmen Valerie Montoya (La Mirada HS), Brianna Gutierrez (St. Matthias HS) and Jasmynne Roberts (Long Beach Poly HS) all posting 11 kills each, the team combined to record 14 service aces. Gutierrez was dominant at the net with her five solo blocks and three assisted blocks, with the tandem of Michelle Barba (Downey HS) and Crissy Silavong (Katella HS) combining for 34 assists. Sophomore Ashley Castro (Santa Fe HS) helped keep rallies alive with her 29 digs, while Silavong (19) and Montoya (14) also making key contributions in the win.

Roberts and Montoya each made their presence known at the net in the win over College of the Desert, with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Add freshman Sara Hickman (La Mirada HS) and her team-high 14 kills to that group and the Falcons had a strong balance of an offensive attack. Sophomore Chelsea James (La Mirada HS) posted six assisted blocks, while Gutierrez had a pair of solo blocks. Castro (24 digs, four service aces), Barba (18 assists), Silavong (17 assists) ad Roberts (16 digs) were all instrumental in the team's third win in a row.
