Getting their first look at the new team in action, the Cerritos College women's water polo coaching staff saw them split their four games at the American River Tournament over the weekend. The Falcons (2-2) dropped games to American River (10-5) and San Joaquin Delta (11-2), while the picked up victories against Las Positas (8-5) and Santa Rosa (18-2). Cerritos will now open South Coast Conference play on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. when they host Rio Hondo College.

Cerritos vs. American River: The Falcons scored the first goal of the game, thanks to freshman Jenny Parra (Schurr HS), but the Beavers went on to take a 3-1 lead in the second quarter and led the rest of the way. Cerritos got to within 8-5 in the third period, but were held scoreless for the remainder of the game. Parra and freshman Vanessa Hinojosa (Bell Gardens HS) each scored twice, while sophomore goalie Amanda Rabb (Gahr HS) posted six saves.

Cerritos vs. Las Positas: A trio of players scored twice in the win, while Rabb turned away seven shots. The Falcons trailed 2-0 in the second quarter and then broke open a 3-3 tie with three consecutive goals. Hinojosa, sophomore Claudia Martinez (Roosevelt HS) and freshman Channon Owens (Kennedy HS) each scored twice, while Owens led the team with five steals. Freshman Mikaela Padilla (Schurr HS) recorded three assists in the win.

Cerritos vs. San Joaquin Delta: Offense was hard to come by for the Falcons after the first quarter. After the first quarter it was a 3-2 Mustangs lead, but Cerritos would go scoreless the rest of the way. Rabb has three saves and three steals in the game, but nine turnovers by the team hurt their chances.

Cerritos vs. Santa Rosa: The Falcons concluded the tournament with their biggest offensive outburst of the season. They scored six goals in the first half, and then matched that total in each of the following two quarters to post the lopsided win. Hinojosa led the team with five goals, while Owens contributed three goals, three assists and a team-high seven steals. Parra picked up three goals, with Martinez adding three steals and Rabb recorded five saves.
