Hosting the Cerritos Freestyle Open on Saturday, the Cerritos College women's wrestling team had a pair of individual champions. Although no team scores were kept, the Falcons saw 155-pound Aine Drury (Westminster HS) and 170-pound Nile Jernigan (Cerritos HS/University of the Cumberlands) sweep through their competition to win titles in their weight classifications. The team will now travel north to compete in the Menlo College Open on February 12.

At 155 pounds, Drury recorded three straight technical falls to capture her title. She posted consecutive 10-0 victories over Johanna Snider of Vanguard University and Yasmine Sherer of Bakersfield College to reach the finals. In the championship match, Drury earned a 14-3 technical fall win over Alexandra Lopez of Menlo College. The day before, Drury posted wins over both Snider and Lopez in the Falcons dual meets.

As for Jernigan, she needed to win four matches to pick up her championship and did so with two technical falls and two pins. A 14-2 win over Gaililea Garcia of East Los Angeles College opened the day, which was followed by a 10-0 win over Viviana Aviles of Menlo College. In the semifinals, Jernigan pinned Diana Cardonas of Bakersfield College in 1:40 and then finished off Jessica Mendiete of Menlo College in 2:44 to win the championship.

Other Falcons who competed included freshman Lucy Guadarrama (Orange HS), who placed second at 109 pounds, as she earned a pin in her first match, but suffered a loss in her other match of the day. Also earning wins in the tournament included Jaylene Martinez (Whittier HS) at 136 pounds, Isabel Guerrero (Warren HS) and Savannah Valle (Warren HS) at 143 pounds, as well as Natalie Resendiz (El Toro HS) at 170 pounds.
