For the second time this season, Cerritos College women's cross country runner Lauren Berg (Fountain Valley HS) placed first overall at an invitational. On Friday, the freshman took first place overall at the San Diego Mesa Invitational, as the Falcons placed second as a team. The 74 team points amassed by Cerritos trailed only conference foe and state power Mt. San Antonio College, while they also edged out third place Riverside City College, who placed third with 76 team points. The Falcons will run in the Vanguard Invitational next Friday at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.
Berg, who also won the title at the Fresno Invitational in the team's first meet of the season, was the only runner to record a sub-19:00 mark, as she finished the 5K in 18:59.76. Her closest competition came from Yahaira Zuniga of San Diego Mesa College, who finished in second place at 19:16.14.
Of the seven Cerritos runners, five of them finished in the top 26, with Tracy Acevedo (Santa Fe HS) the second runner to complete to course for the team in a time of 20:39.10, which put her in 13th place. The duo of Isabel Orosco (Schurr HS) and Charlotte Barrera (El Rancho HS) finished six seconds apart, with Orosco's time of 21:08.42 putting her in 20th place, while Barrera placed 23rd with a clocking of 21:14.00.
