Trailing 3-2 with two innings remaining, the Cerritos College baseball team allowed host Mt. San Jacinto College to score three times in the eighth and ended up falling, 6-3. The Falcons (4-5) return to Kincaid Field on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. to take on Golden West College in a non-conference game.

In that all-important eighth inning, sophomore Jonathan Grana (Downey HS) came on in relief of freshman George Mendoza (Bell Gardens HS), who allowed a pair of singles. With runners at first and second base, sophomore catcher Chris Carrillo (St. Paaul HS/San Jose State University) allowed a passed ball, which advanced the runners before an intentional walk to Joseph Favela loaded the bases. Grana then hit Daniel Fernandez to bring home a run before Manny Mendoza singled to drive in the other two runs of the inning.

Cerritos did get one of those runs back in the top of the ninth inning, but ended the game when sophomore pinch-hitter Jacob Valdez (Katella HS) struck out. The run came home on a single by freshman Frank Vargas (El Rancho HS), who drove in freshman Kyle Carpenter (Mayfair HS) after he doubled to open the inning.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on sacrifce squeeze bunt by sophomore first baseman Jose Romero (Whitter HS), which brought home freshman Kenton McDonald (Long Beach Poly HS) after he walked and advanced to third base on an error. It was a 2-0 Cerritos lead in the fifth inning when sophomore Johnny Martinez (Katella HS) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt moved Martinez to second base and an error advanced him to third base before sophomore Jared Robinson (Bishop Amat HS) doubled him home.

Sophomore starting pitcher Dylan Algra (Valley Christian HS) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing three runs (two earned) in 5 1/3 innings. Offensively, Cerritos left 12 runners on base.
