Trailing for most of the game against Fresno City College on Tuesday night, the Cerritos College baseball team was able to come back and post a 6-5 non-conference win over Fresno City College. The Falcons (21-11), playing the game in Santa Maria, trailed by as much as 4-0 before starting their comeback. The scored the game-winning runs on a two-run single by sophomore outfielder Johnny Martinez (Katella HS) in the bottom of the sixth inning. On Wednesday, the team will play a 2:00 p.m. game against Cuesta College.
Making his first start of the season, sophomore Jacob Northcutt (Summerville HS) surrendered four runs (three earned) in just 1 1/3 innings of work before being replaced by freshman Ryan Arambula (Bell Gardens HS), who helped shut down the Rams (18-14). He pitched four innings, allowing just one unearned run and four hits. Three other Falcons saw action on the mound, with freshman Kyle Carpenter (Mayfair HS) picking up the win to go 6-2, while freshman Joe Fernandez (La Habra HS) recorded the final out for his third save of the season.
Aside from the two-run single from Martinez, Cerritos also scored twice in the second and fourth innings. Sophomore third baseman Hayden Stevens (Katella HS) led off the second with a single before sophomore first baseman Jose Romero (Whittier HS) was hit by a pitch. The two moved up a base on a passed ball before sophomore outfielder Jose Ayala (Maywood Academy HS) came through with a two-out, two-run double.
Stevens started the scoring in the fourth inning with a base hit and then stole second. He came home on a single from freshman second baseman Victor Guadalupe (La Quinta HS) before freshman shortstop David Lopez (Montebello HS) tied the game with a run-scoring double.
