It's never easy to jump on a bus and travel four hours to play a game and then know you're getting right back on the bus to come back home when the game is over. For the Cerritos College men's basketball team, they made the most of their trip to Allan Hancock College and came away with a 75-69 win to improve their season record to 4-2. The Falcons will get a chance to play their home opener on Friday at 5:00 p.m. when they take on East Los Angeles College.
Leading by 11 (69-58) with 4:31 remaining after a Malik Johnson (Compton HS) three-pointer, and then 13 when Juice Belvin (St. Anthony HS) followed with a lay-up, Cerritos had to withstand a late Bulldogs (4-4) run that made it a closer game. Allan Hancock scored the next nine points to draw to within 71-67. During that run, the Falcons went 0-for-1 from the field, missed a pair of free throws and turned the ball over once, which aided the Bulldogs.
With :37 seconds left, Johnson converted one of two free throws to make it a 72-67 lead. The Falcons were called for a foul on the second miss, with Allan Hancock netting both of their free throws. A Falcon turnover was followed by a missed three-pointer from Amari Stroud of the Bulldogs. Cerritos then missed a lay-up, but retained the ball after the ball was knocked out of bounds with :06 seconds remaining. Cerroy Chenault (Warren HS) was fouled and sealed the game with a pair of free throws.
Chenault led the team with 15 points, which included a trio of three-pointers, while Andre Fields (Warren HS) accounted for 11 points and three rebounds, although the Falcons were out-rebounded, 34-29. Off the bench, Dorian Harris (Cerritos HS) posted 10 points, while Garrett Bell (Sonora HS) accounted for all nine of his points on three-pointers. Johnson finished with nine points, five rebounds and five assists.
