In their final game at the Riverside City Tournament on Saturday, the Cerritos College men's basketball team came away with a 66-59 win over Copper Mountain College. The Falcons (6-5) received strong performances from players in each half to propel the team. They will now travel to Santa Monica College on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference game.
Helping Cerritos come back from a 21-15 first half deficit was freshman Garrett Bell (Sonora HS), who drained consecutive three-points to draw the team even, and then hit his third in a row to make it a 24-24 game. Although they entered halftime down, 30-25, the Falcons looked for a strong second half, which was something that had eluded them their two previous games.
The team opened with sophomore Jaishon Forte (Rancho Verde HS) knocking down a pair of free throws, followed by a jumper from freshman Malik Johnson (Compton HS) to get to within 30-29. Buckets by sophomore Cerroy Chenault (Warren HS) and freshman Jalen Shores (Lakewood HS) was followed by a three-pointer from sophomore Dorian Harris (Cerritos HS), as the Falcons opened up a 36-30 lead. Harris (pictured, left), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, then made it a nine-point lead with his second straight three-pointer, as Cerritos scored the first 14 points to start the second half.
It was a 50-50 score with 4:49 left on the clock until Copper Mountain regained the lead until sophomore Juice Belvin (St. Anthony HS) scored the game's next six points to put Cerritos back on top by fur points (56-52) with 3:15 remaining. Bell made it a five-point lead with his fifth three-pointer of the game, while in the final minute, Cerritos converted all four of their free throws to close out the game.
Bell scored 12 of his team-high 17 points in the first half, while Belvin finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three steals, as Cerritos received those contributions off the bench. Shores recorded 11 points, with Harris producing nine points and a team-high seven rebounds in the win.
