Last year, members of the Cerritos College men's tennis team swept the singles and doubles championship at the USTA/ITA West Region Championships. The lone carry-over from last season, Amadi Kagoma, was looking to be a repeat champion in doubles play, while he also advanced to the semi-finals in singles action this past weekend  in the tournament at Cerritos College. Last year, Kagoma teamed with Nathan Eshmade to win the title, while Eshmade, who signed a scholarship with UC Santa Barbara, also won the singles championship.

In singles, Kagoma escaped a three-set match in the third round and then recorded a win in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal match, Kagoma won the first set, 6-1 over Los Angeles Pierce College's Manish Kumar. But fatigue and cramps slowed Kagoma and he dropped the next two sets, 4-6, 1-6. Kagoma reached the semifinals by defeating Filippo Bedin of San Diego Mesa, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round and then fought off Duong Nguyen of Arizona Mesa CC, 6-7, 7-6, 10-5 to reach the quarters. Kagoma dispatched Corey Karen of Ventura College to advance to the semis against Kumar, who ended up losing in the finals.

The Falcons had four other players competing in singles action, with freshman Agustin Lombardi advancing to the semifinals, but fell, 2-6, 2-6 to Kumar. Lombardi opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kevin Stanley of Saddleback College and then defeated Kimo Barrere of San Diego Mesa, 6-4, 2-6, 10-3. He advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-2 sweep of Nicholas Silvestri of Arizona Mesa.

Other singles players included sophomore Sheldon Hsieh, who won a pair of matches, while incoming freshmen Tony Torebella, Mark Antoniuk and Henry Ayseiga each won their opening round matches before getting eliminated.

There were three Cerritos doubles teams in the tournament, with Kagoma and Torebella-Clark (Cypress HS) performing the best, as they made it to the championship match. Seeded #2, the pair easily swept through three opponents before dropping an 8-4 decision in the finals against Ali Bougzoul and Hironori Koyanagi of Ventura College. The other two Falcon doubles teams were defeated in the second round.
