Facing three teams from Northern California, the Cerritos College men's tennis team posted wins in two of the matches over the weekend. The Falcons (14-3) opened with a 7-2 win over Chabot, before suffering a 5-2 setback against Foothill College. They closed out the weekend with an 8-1 win over the three-time defending state champion host Rams. The team resumes South Coast Conference play on Tuesday when they host El Camino College in a 2:00 p.m. match.

Cerritos vs. Chabot: The team opened with three straight wins in doubles play to take a commanding lead. After the Falcons quickly won four singles matches, they defaulted out of the other two remaining matches in order to rest for their next opponent. A couple of players moved up the ladder against the Gladiators, with freshman Mark Antoniuk (W. 124 School, Russia) playing in the #2 position and recorded a 6-4, 6-3 win, while freshman Agustin Lombardi (E.S.O.S., Argentina) won, 6-2, 6-1 in the #3 spot. Freshman Henry Ayesiga (Malezi School, Kenya) easily won his #5 match, 6-1, 6-1, with sophomore Milos Zoric (Gimnazjia Indija, Serbia) improving to 7-0 on the year with his 6-3, 6-2 win.

Cerritos vs. Foothill: Taking on one of the best teams in Northern California, the Falcons appeared to be in good shape during doubles play. They were leading 5-4 in the #1 match and 7-2 in the #2 match, but lost both, which put them in a tight spot heading into singles play. Both ended up being 9-7 losses, and they trailed 2-1 in the team score. Sophomore Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya) recorded a 6-1, 7-6(7) win in the #1 match, but Cerritos lost the next three, with the final two singles matches not completed. Freshman Antonio Torrebella-Clark (Cypress HS) fought back to win the second set against Brenden Lum in the #2 singles match, 6-3 after losing the first set by the same score. In the tie-breaker, Lum came away with a 10-7 win, which sealed the deal.

Cerritos vs. Fresno City: Looking to taking out their frustration on their next opponent, the Falcons easily defeated the defending state champions. They opened with three solid doubles wins and won the first five singles matches before defaulting in the final, which gave the Rams their lone team point. Lombardi and Antoniuk made sure they would not surrender a 7-2 lead and posted an 8-5 victory, which carried over into the singles match for Lombardi, who recorded a 6-2, 6-2 win in the #5 position. All of the Falcon wins in singles were by straight sets, with Kagoma and Torrebella-Clark, along with Zoric and freshman Mathieu David (Nimes, France) posting 8-1 wins.
