With their home opener against #5-ranked Glendale College, the Cerritos College men's tennis team was gearing up for a potential post-season match-up. But the #3-ranked Falcons made sure they were going to let the rest of Southern California take notice, as they defeated the Vaqueros, 9-0 on Thursday. Cerritos (2-0) will now host Cypress College in a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match next Tuesday.

The match started with doubles and the Falcons took a commanding 3-0 team lead with some solid play early in the season. The top doubles team of sophomore Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya) and freshman Antonio Torrebella-Clark (Cypress HS) had the toughest match, as they pulled out an 8-5 win. The #3 team of freshman Mathieu David (Nimes, France) and sophomore Milos Zoric (Gimnazja Indija, Serbia) came away with an 8-4 win. Freshman Mark Antoniuk (W. 124 School, Russia) and Agustin Lombardi (E.S.O.S., Argentina) easily recorded an 8-1 win.

Torrebella-Clark made a strong impression with his 6-3, 6-3 win over Chris Pope in the #2 singles match. At the top of the ladder, Kagoma has his hands full with Hosep Orojian after leading early, 4-1 in the first set. But Orojian went on the offensive and took the set 7-5. Kagoma took full advantage of the momentum switch and won the next, 6-0. However, momentum switched again, with Orojian leading 3-0, 4-1 and 5-2 in the third set. A change of patterning resulted in a big break of serve and then it was 5-5. In the tie-break, Kagoma was down the entire time and 2-4 at the switch. A crucial double fault by Orojian tied it up and it took two match points for Kagoma to come through, 7-6 (6).

The Falcons swept the other five sets to close out the commanding win. Antoniuk (6-4, 6-3), Lombardi (6-0, 6-3) and David (6-4, 6-3) posted wins, as did freshman Henry Ayesiga (Malezi School, Kenya), who posted a 6-3, 6-2 decision in the #5 position.
