M. Tennis: Falcons gear up for state championships

This week, the Cerritos College men's tennis team will compete in both singles and doubles at the CCCAA State Championships, which will take place in Ojai. The Falcons have qualified all six of their singles players, as well as all three of their doubles teams. Two singles players and two doubles teams have been seeded in the top 16 for the tournament and will receive first round byes.

Getting underway on Thursday morning, freshmen Mark Antoniuk (W. 124 School, Russia), Mathieu David (Nimes, France) and Henry Ayesiga (Malezi School, Kenya), along with sophomore Milos Zoric (Gimnazjia Indija, Serbia) will play their first round matches. Later in the afternoon, the doubles team of David and Zoric will compete.

Antoniuk will take on Gurman Baines of Modesto College at 8:00 a.m. at Pacifica High School in Oxnard, with the winner playing #7-seeded Hosep Orojian of Glendale College at 11:00 a.m., also at Pacifica High. As for David, he will face Avi Bami of Fresno City College at 8:00 a.m. at the Ojai Tennis Center, with the winner taking on #2-seeded Morgan Peyre of Grossmont College. Zoric is also playing at the Ojai Tennis Center against Andy Yang of Fresno City, and the winner squares off against #6-seeded Simon Guillen of Irvine Valley College. Ayesiga is in the same bracket and will take on Ryan Mariano of Saddleback College with the winner playing #7-seeded Jimmy Giovannini of American River College. Earlier in the year, Guillen defeated Ayesiga, 6-1, 6-1.

Receiving byes in the first round are sophomore Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya) who's seeded #4, while freshman Agustin Lombardi (E.S.O.S., Argentina) is seeded #14. Kagoma will play at the Ojai Tennis Center on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. against the winner of the Jackson Barcellos (Modesto) vs. Patrick Timmons (Grossmont) match, with Lombardi playing at Pacifica High School. He will take on Dylan King of American River, who also received a bye.

In doubles play, Kagoma and Ayesiga, who have a 6-0 record as a tandem, were seeded #3 and will play at 3:00 p.m. against the winner of the Austyn Postler/Isaiah Trujillo (Fresno City) vs. Dale Gutierrez/Logan Rinder (San Diego City) match. Antoniuk and Lombardi were seeded #11 and will take on Trevor Batchelder/Gregory Ruffin of Cabrillo College. Competing in the first round is the team of David and Zoric, who will take on Jackson Barcellos/Frank Perez of Modesto, with the winner advancing to play #5-seeded Siggy Menzel/Morgan Pecre of Grossmont.
