M. Tennis: Pair of singles and doubles teams remain

After the first day of the CCCAA State Men's Tennis Championships, the Cerritos College men's tennis team has two singles and two doubles teams remaining. The championships, which are being held in and around Ojai, will continue tomorrow and will run through Sunday.

In singles play, sophomore Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya), seeded #4, won his lone match and has advanced to the Round of 32. After receiving a bye in the first round, Kagoma defeated Lawrence Liu of Grossmont College. The victory will now pit Kagoma against Bruno Figla of Irvine Valley College, who upset #13-seeded John Foote of American River College. The match is slated for 8:00 a.m. at the Ojai Tennis Center.

The Falcons other seeded singles player, freshman Agustin Lombardi (E.S.O.S., Argentina) posted a 6-1, 6-1 win against Dylan King of American River. On Friday, Lombardi will take on #4-seeded Felipe Resende of Foothill College at Pacifica High School.

Eliminated from singles play are freshman Mark Antoniuk (W. 124 School, Russia), who opened with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Gurman Bains of Modesto College, but was then defeated, 3-6, 6-4, 0-6 by #7-seeded Hosep Orojian of Glendale College. Freshman Mathieu David (Nimes, France) also won his first match, 6-0, 6-2, but was handed a 1-6, 0-6 defeat at the hands of #2-seeded Morgan Peyre of Grossmont College. The duo of Milos Zoric (Gimnazjia Indija, Serbia) and Henry Ayesiga (Malezi School, Kenya) dropped their first round matches.

The #2-seeded doubles team of Kagoma and Ayesiga were tested by Dale Gutierrez and Logan Rinder of San Diego City, and won, 4-6 6-1, 10-6 to advace to the Round of 32. They will take on Thibaud Garces and Rinder, who beat the #13-seeded team. Antoniuk and Lombardi also won their opening match, 6-1, 6-0 and will take on #6-seeded TJ Aukland and Gregory Ruffin of Cabrillo College. The team of David and Zoric were the only Falcons to lose, as they were defeated by #5-seeded Peyre and Siggy Menzel, 4-6, 3-6.
