While at the Cal State Los Angeles Invitational over the weekend, the Cerritos College men's track and field team found themselves lining up next to four-year colleges. The Falcons, who had entries in a majority of the events, fared very well early in the season. The team will send their distance runners to the Occidental Distance Carnival on Friday, while the team will also compete in a five-way meet at UC Irvine on Saturday.

The highlight of the day was sophomore Matthew Seawright (Long Beach Millikan HS), who set a personal record in the hammer throw with a distance of 54.19 meters. His distance was the second best in school history and he placed second in the event behind Cal State Bakersfield's Bryan Wilmert, who recorded a throw of 59.35 meters. Seawright also took fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 13.26 meters, while sophomore Andrew Prieto (El Rancho HS) took seventh place at 12.79 meters.

Freshman sprinter Virjilio Griggs (Warren, TX HS) turned in a third place time of 21.24 in the 200 meters, while sophomore distance runner Anthony Lozano (La Serna HS) won the 1500 meters with a time of 3:57.66. He also placed seventh in the 800 meters when he crossed the finish line in 1:56.89.

School record holder in the 110-meter hurdles Juan Ward was unable to match his time of 14.36, but his time of 15.04 earned him an eighth place finish. Posting faster times on the day were teammates Mackenzi Rickman (Carson HS), who took third place in 14.55 and Tyler Rios (Los Alamitos HS), whose time of 14.97 put him in seventh place. Rickman also came in third place in the 400-meter IH in 54.23, with Ward coming in seventh place in 55.51.

In the long jump, sophomore Muaz Ilyas (Fountain Valley HS) saw his distance of 6.32 meters earn him a second place, while teammates Myles Davis (Hickman) came in fourth place (6.14 meters), Eric Knowles (Saint Francis HS) placed fifth at 6.12 meters and Jaime Vega (Downey HS) saw his jump of 6.09 meters earn him sixth place.
