Softball: Ariana Mejia named SCC Player of the Year

Cerritos College freshman third baseman Ariana Mejia (Gahr HS), who led the South Coast Conference with a .569 batting average, was named the  conference's Player of the Year. She was joined on the 1st Team by sophomore first baseman Andrea Arellano (Downey HS), while a trio of players earned 2nd Team All-SCC honors. Mejia was also one of 18 players in Southern California to be named All-State, while Arellano was selected All-Southern California.

The Falcons (29-10), who finished second in the South Coast Conference, were seeded #10 for the upcoming Southern California Regional Playoffs and will travel to take on #7-seeded San Diego Mesa College this weekend in a best-of-three series.

Named to the 2nd Team were freshman outfielder Arianna Hernandez (Santa Fe HS), sophomore pitcher Kayla Klein (La Habra HS/Texas A&M University) and pitcher/designated player Jamie Ramirez (El Rancho HS).

Andrea Arellano was named All-Southern California and 1st Team All-SCC Mejia is batting .443 on the season and has seven home runs to go along with 14 doubles, 37 RBI and 18 walks with only two strikeouts. As for Arellano, she leads the team in home runs (11) and RBI (57), while she has also drawn 22 walks and has six doubles. She has been nearly flawless in the field with just one error and a .996 fielding percentage. Hernandez is the team leader in runs (48) and stolen bases (18), while she is hitting at a .370 clip with 26 RBI from the leadoff spot in the batting order. At the plate, Ramirez is the team leader in average .458 and hits (29), while she is second on the team with 46 RBI. In the circle, Ramirez has compiled an 11-3 record with a 2.34 ERA in 71 innings of work. Klein leads the pitching staff in innings (91), strikeouts (94), ERA (2.15) and is 11-4 on the season.

Earning all-conference honorable mention was sophomore Ashley Miller (West Torrance/North Platte, NE CC), who is hitting .366 with 18 RBI this season. Miller has played four different positions on the year, but has settled in as the team's starting shortstop.
