In their 4-3 South Coast Conference loss to visiting East Los Angeles College on Tuesday, the Cerritos College softball team need look no farther than several missed opportunities which led to their setback. The Falcons (5-7, 3-4), who are playing six games this week, will host Compton College at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday in another conference game.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Huskies (1-7, 1-3), sophomore second baseman Deja Sendejas (El Rancho HS) led off when she reached on an error. With one out, freshman outfielder Itzel Soto (Long Beach Millikan HS) grounded a ball to the middle of the infield, where second baseman Serena Lopez flipped the ball to shortstop Julie Granadeno, but she dropped the ball, making both runners safe. However, Sendejas thought she was out and walked off the bag, where she was quickly tagged for the second out. The game then ended when sophomore designated player Nicoal Magdaleno (La Habra HS) grounded out.

East Los Angeles took a quick 2-0 lead against freshman starting pitcher Skyler Swearingen (Mayfair HS), but the Falcons battled back to take the lead with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. The Huskies took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the fifth inning off Swearingen and sophomore Ally Udell (Whittier Christian HS), who took the loss.

A leadoff walk to sophomore Victoria Medina (Whittier HS/Rio Hondo College) in the second inning was followed by an RBI double from Soto, who was then part of a double play when Magdaleno lined out and Soto was off the bag. Freshman catcher Erica Martinez (Kennedy HS) then hit a double, which would have scored Soto. In the third inning, sophomore first baseman Keira Bolinas (Torrance HS) was hit by a pitch, while sophomore third baseman Kayla Hernandez (Santa Fe HS) drew a walk. Sendejas then tied the game with an RBI single, while the inning continued when Medina walked to load the bases. A forced play at home accounted for the second out, while Cerritos left the bases loaded when a ground out ended the inning.

Martinez led off the fourth inning with a walk, and moved around to third on sacrifice bunts from freshman outfielder Haley Davis (Mayfair HS) and sophomore shortstop Tena Spoolstra (Mayfair HS). Bolinas gave the Falcons the lead with an RBI single, with the Falcons leaving two runners on base when the inning ended.
