Locked in a back and forth game with host East Los Angeles College on Thursday, the Cerritos College softball team came away with a 9-7 South Coast Conference win. The victory improves the Falcons record to 12-13 overall and 7-7 in conference play, while the team will be hosting Los Angeles Harbor College in another conference game on Friday at noon at Nancy Kelly Field.
With East LA leading, 4-3 heading into the top of the sixth inning, Cerritos put six runs on the board to take a 9-4 lead. In the inning, sophomore first baseman Keira Bolinas (Torrance HS) drove in the first run with a single, with sophomore outfielder Victoria Medina (Whittier HS/Rio Hondo College) bringing in a run with a bases loaded walk. The duo of freshman outfielder Haley Davis (Mayfair HS) and sophomore second baseman Deja Sendejas (El Rancho HS) provided two-run singles to close out the scoring in the inning.
The Huskies picked up two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and after getting to within 9-7 with a run in the seventh inning, sophomore pitcher Sierra Gerdts (Montebello HS) came back in the game to retire the final batter with a runner on third base. Gerdts picked up her first save of the season, with sophomore Alize Lopez (John Glenn HS/Rio Hondo College) earning a win in her first appearance of the season. Lopez tossed 1 1/3 innings and allowed one run on two hits.
Sophomore shortstop Tena Spoolstra (Mayfair HS) had a remarkable defensive game for the Falcons, as she recorded 11 defensive assists. She covered most of the infield and handled all three outs in the seventh inning. At the plate, Spoolstra went 3-for-5 to extend her hitting streak to 16 games and is batting .468 on the year. Davis and Sendejas each posted three-hit games and combined to drive in five runs.
