The Cerritos College women's water polo team started their 2013 season over the weekend at the American River Tournament and split their four games. The Falcons (2-2) opened with a 14-8 loss to Santa Rosa Junior College, followed by an 11-8 win over Fresno City College on the first day. They went on to defeat San Joaquin Delta College, 8-6 before a 9-2 setback against the host Beavers concluded their weekend. The team will now open defense of their South Coast Conference championship by traveling to Mt. San Antonio College for a 3:00 p.m. match on Wednesday.

In the opening-season loss to Santa Rosa, the Falcons trailed from the outset and looked to sophomore Catie Tuning (Los Altos HS/University of La Verne) to keep them within striking distance. Tuning scored four of the team's goals, with four other players registering one each. Freshman goalkeeper Catherine Borunda (El Rancho HS) turned away seven shots in the loss. Tuning was once again the go-to player in their second game of the day, as she scored eight goals in the win over Fresno City. Additionally, she posted four steals to lead Cerritos, while sophomore Bianca Serrano (Cerritos HS) provided more scoring, as she added a pair of goals. Freshman Kaitlyn Mendez (Cerritos HS) found the open players and dished out six assists in the win.

It was a close match against Delta, but the Falcons just couldn't get their offense going. They took 21 shots on goal, but only found the back of the net six times. Tuning scored four times on six shots, while freshman Alexandra Lopez (Whittier HS) attempted seven shots without scoring. Cerritos was buzzing the net and drew eight ejections, while they scored on four of them. Borunda made eight saves in the game. The tournament concluded with the team falling behind 5-0 at the end of the first half, and ended up dropping the game to American River.
