For the Cerritos College women's water polo team, their season so far has not been one that they have been familiar with after a history of success. The Falcons (3-6), champions of the South Coast Conference last year, have gotten off to a slow start after the first week of the season. They dropped their first three games at the Chaffey Tournament over the weekend and salvaged the trip with a win in their final contest. The team opened up on Saturday with losses against Ventura College (6-5) and Cypress College (10-7), followed by a 15-5 setback against powerhouse Riverside City College on Sunday. The team ended the tournament with a 12-6 victory over Fresno City College. Cerritos will look for their first conference win at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday when they host Los Angeles Trade-Tech College.

The tournament opened with the team playing an even match against the Pirates, as the game was tied three different times. After sophomore Catie Tuning (Los Altos HS/University of La Verne) tied the game at 5-5 with 1:34 left in fourth quarter, Ventura scored the eventual game-winning goal with :53 seconds left. The Falcons called a timeout with :05 seconds left in hopes of sending the game into overtime, but their final shot was off target. Tuning led the team with four goals, while sophomore Bianca Serrano (Cerritos HS) recored four steals, with the duo of sophomore Teresa Zuniga (California HS) and freshman Alexandra Lopez (Whittier HS) both adding three steals.

After making seven saves in the loss to Ventura, freshman goalkeeper Catherine Brounda (El Rancho HS) posted four stops in the loss to Cypress. The Falcons were as close as 7-6 in the third quarter after a Kaitlyn Mendez (Cerritos HS) goal, but the Chargers scored three straight goals to open up a 10-6 lead late in the game. Mendez and Tuning each scored twice for Cerritos, with Zuniga registering four steals.

Goals were hard to come by against the Tigers, but the Falcons never stopped working hard. Zuniga led the team with a pair of goals, while Lopez had four steals. Borunda recorded seven saves in the loss. Scoring was balanced in the team's second win of the year over Fresno City, with Tuning scoring three times. The quartet of Zuniga, Lopez, Serrano and Mendez all scored twice, with Borunda making seven saves. Cerritos broke a 4-4 first quarter tie by outscoring the Rams 3-0 in the second quarter and then pulled away with a strong fourth quarter.
