The Cerritos College women's water polo team used a strong second quarter to help them pull away from host El Camino College, 13-7 in a South Coast Conference match on Wednesday. The win by the Falcons (11-12, 5-2) keeps the team in third place with one more conference match remaining before the SCC Tournament. Cerritos will now compete in the Battle at the Beach at Cypress College on Friday and then at Long Beach City College on Saturday. They will open with San Diego Mesa College (12:20 p.m.) and Citrus (3:35 p.m.) on Friday and will then play a pair of games on Saturday at LBCC.

In the win over the Warriors (7-13, 3-4), the Falcons jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter lead, and then used a goal from sophomore Catie Tuning (Los Altos HS/University of La Verne) with five seconds left in the second quarter to take a 5-3 lead into halftime. Cerritos extended their lead to 7-4 by the end of the third and score six times in the fourth quarter to record the win.

Sophomore Teresa Zuniga (California HS) and freshman Claudia Martinez (Roosevelt HS) led the team with three goals each, while Tuning and freshman Celeste Ibarra (Gahr HS) each scored twice. Zuniga led the defense with six steals and Tuing added four, while freshman goalkeeper Catherine Borunda (El Rancho HS) posted 11 saves against El Camino.
