After a slow start to the season, the Cerritos College women's water polo team has now won five of their last six games. The Falcons (9-12) picked up three wins in four games over the weekend at the Pasadena City Tournament and will resume South Coast Conference play at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday when they travel to Rio Hondo College.

At the tournament, Cerritos opened with a 16-4 victory over Southwestern College and followed that with a 9-7 win over Diablo Valley College. On the second day, Los Angeles Pierce College snapped the team's five-game winning streak with a 13-8 setback, while the Falcons responded with a 20-5 win over conference opponent Los Angeles Trade-Tech College.

Cerritos vs. Southwestern: It was a close first period, with the Falcons holding a slim 3-2 advantage. But they opened up a 5-2 lead by halftime and continued to pull away in the third quarter and went on to the 16-4 victory. Sophomore Teresa Zuniga (California HS) led the team with five goals and four steals, with sophomore Catie Tuning (Los Altos HS/University of La Verne) accounting for four goals and freshman Celeste Ibarra (Gahr HS) scoring three times. Freshman goalkeeper Catherine Borunda (El Rancho HS) turned away 10 shots in the win.

Cerritos vs. Diablo Valley: Although they never trailed in the game, Cerritos relied on their defense to pull out the win. As a team, the Falcons recorded 19 steals, with Zuniga leading the way with five, while freshman Kaitlyn Mendez (Cerritos HS) finished with four. Tuning paced the offense with five goals, with Borunda posting seven saves and adding three steals.

Cerritos vs. Los Angeles Pierce: Unlike their previous games, the Falcons fell behind and were never able to pull even with LA Pierce in their only loss of the tournament. Tuning scored three times and assisted on three more goals, with Zuniga contributing two goals and three steals in the loss. Borunda made eight saves in the game.

Cerritos vs. Los Angeles Trade-Tech: It was a memorable game for Zuniga, who scored a career-high nine goals, while she also recorded a career-high six steals in the big win. It was only 7-3 at halftime, but the Falcons outscored LATT 13-2 in the second half. Mendez finished with four goals, with Tuning and freshman Meghan Gonzalez (Whittier HS) each adding a pair of goals.
