Not since his first season in 2005 has the Cerritos College women's water polo coach Sergio Macias gone an entire season with more than 10 losses. After four consecutive losses at the Cuesta Tournament over the weekend, the Falcons have now fallen to 4-11 on the year. They have played some of the best competition in the state, which included their opponents this past weekend. They opened with losses to Orange Coast College (11-6) and Golden West College (20-2) on Saturday and followed that with setbacks against Riverside City College (17-7) and the host Cougars (8-7) on Sunday. The team will play two South Coast Conference matches on Wednesday, as they host Pasadena City at 3:00 p.m., while East Los Angeles College comes in for a 5:15 p.m. match.

In the loss to Cuesta in their final game of the tournament, Cerritos had several chances to snap their losing streak. They stayed within striking distance the entire match, but struggled when it came to playing with the man advantage. In the fourth quarter alone, the Falcons missed out on three straight chances to score with a 6-on-5 opportunity. Freshman goalkeeper Catherine Borunda (El Rancho HS) was doing a fine job keeping the game close, as she made 11 saves, while the offense was balanced with six different goal scorers. But the team missed on 19 shots, which contributed to their loss.

Against defending state champion Riverside City, sophomore Catie Tuning (Los Altos HS/University of La Verne) led the team with four goals. But it wasn't enough against a very fast team with a lot of depth on their bench. The Falcons trailed 12-1 at halftime. It was the same when facing another perennial powerhouse in Golden West, who limited the team to just one goal per half. Sophomore Teresa Zuniga (California HS) recorded four steals in the loss. Tuning scored four times in the opening game against Orange Coast, but played the entire game from behind. They trailed 6-1 at halftime and couldn't prevent the Pirates from scoring several times before being able to answer with one of their own.
