Getting an early look at the state championship course, the Cerritos College women's cross country team had the second overall finisher, but did not have enough runners to comprise a team score. The Falcons, who had just four runners at the Fresno Invitational on Saturday, saw freshman Samantha Martinez (Fountain Valley HS) post the second fastest time of the day over the 3.1-mile course.
Martinez, who sat in fourth after the first mile, moved into third place after the second mile of the course. She eventually pulled into second place and turned in a time of 19:42.7 and trailed only Ailene Ross of Long Beach City College, who won the invitational with a time of 19:36.6.
The next Falcon to complete the course was freshman Delilah Chavez (Lakewood HS), who placed 16th out of 70 runners when she posted a time of 21:19.5 and finished six seconds ahead of the next finisher. Over two minutes later, freshman Mia Najera (Warren HS) recorded a 42nd place time at 23:52.5, while freshman Leslie Juarez (Warren HS) was close behind at 24:06.5, good for 44th place on the day.
The Falcons will host the Cerritos Invitational next Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Don Knabe Regional Park.
