Facing the #1-ranked team in Southern California, the Cerritos College men's tennis team was defeated 7-2 by Irvine Valley College on Thursday. The Falcons (3-1) come right back on Friday to host Palomar College in a 2:00 p.m. non-conference match.
The day started with a couple of tough doubles matches, with the Falcons in position to win two of them, but fell short of victory in each. In the #1 doubles match, sophomore Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya) and freshman Antonio Torrebella-Clark (Cypress HS) were broken in the first game and could never recover before dropping an 8-6 decision. Leading 7-6 in the #2 match, freshmen Mark Antoniuk (W. 124 School, Russia) and Agustin Lombardi (E.S.O.S., Argentina) had their serve broken and then dropped the next game in an 8-6 loss.
Three of the six singles matches were extended to three sets, with the Falcons winning two of them. Kagoma (7-5, 5-7, 10-7) and Torrebella-Clark (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) posted the team's two wins at the top of the ladder, while Lombardi was defeated, 2-6, 6-2, 8-10 in the #5 position. In the #6 match, freshman Henry Ayesiga (Malezi School, Kenya) came up short in a 5-7, 5-7 score.
