For the first time since they had two of their starters go down with ailments, the Cerritos College men's tennis team was defeated. On Thursday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, the Falcons (18-5) were defeated by College of the Desert (11-1), 7-2 in a non-conference match. The team will conclude their regular season on Friday at 2:00 p.m. when they host Gustavus Adolphus (MN) College (11-6), an NCAA Division III school. The Gusties are ranked #14 in the country among Division III schools.
Cerritos surrendered two points due to their shorthanded squad. Three of the five singles matches were extended to a third set tie-breaker, with the Falcons coming away with two of them. The one they didn't win came at #3, where freshmen Agustin Lombardi (E.S.O.S., Argentina) wasn't able to finish off Felipe Fuentes, who fought back after dropping rhe first set. Agustin was leading, 6-3, 3-0, but ended up dropping a 6-3, 4-6, 4-10 decision.
At the top of the ladder, sophomore Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya) came back from losing the first set to David Bensoussan, 6-7 and took the match after winning the second set, 6-4 and then by a 10-7 score in the tiebreaker. Sophomore Milos Zoric (Gimnazjia Indija, Serbia) posted a 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 win in the #5 singles match for the team's other win on the day.
