With several players dealing with either illness or injuries, the Cerritos College men's tennis team was still able to fight for a 6-3 South Coast Conference win over Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday. The Falcons (12-2, 3-0) maintained their conference lead with the win and will now travel to Fresno for the North/South Tournament over the weekend.
In doubles play, the Mounties took a 2-1 team lead, which included an upset of the top Cerritos doubles team, sophomore Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya) and freshman Antonio Torrebella-Clark (Cypress HS), 8-6. Kagoma, who was fighting off the effects of the flu, lacked the strength to sustain long points, which also contributed to his loss in singles play.
However, the remainder of the Falcon singles players came through and won the other five matches to secure the team win. It didn't come easy, as Torrebella-Clark was extended to a third set before defeating Aron Hayes, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the #2 position. Freshman Agustin Lombardi (E.S.O.S., Argentina), who was one half of the team's lone doubles win, escaped the first set in singles play, 7-6 (7-4), and then cruised in the second set, 6-2 over Kenny Simmons.
Lombardi's doubles partner, freshman Mark Antoniuk (W. 124 School, Russia) posted a hard-fought 7-5, 6-4 win in the #4 match, with freshmen Henry Ayesiga (Malezi School, Kenya) and Mathieu David (Nimes, France) recording straight set wins.
