Facing the defending NCAA Division II Champions on Friday, the Cerritos College men's tennis team opened the day by winning all three of the doubles matches. But when singles play got underway, it was all the Lord Jeffs, as they captured the six team points to post a 6-3 win over the Falcons (15-4). The team will now resume South Coast Conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a 2:00 p.m. match.
Each of the three doubles matches were strong wins by Cerritos, led by the pairing of sophomore Amadi Kagoma (Malezi School, Kenya) and freshman Antonio Torrebella-Clark (Cypress HS) with an 8-4 win. Torrebella-Clark would be held out of singles action due to a nagging injury, which adjusted the team's ladder to accommodate the absence of the #2 player.
Freshmen Agustin Lombardi (E.S.O.S. Argentina) and Mark Antoniuk (W. 124 School, Russia) posted an 8-5 win in doubles play, with freshman Henry Ayesiga (Maleza School, Kenya) and Mathieu David (Nimes, France) collecting an 8-4 victory.
The Falcons failed to capture a set in the singles play but received an excellent effort from Lombardi, who moved into the vacated #2 spot on the ladder. He extended junior Ben Fife to 7-6 in the first set and then lost the second set, 6-4. Kagoma, the team's #1 singles player, was defeated by Andrew Arnabakdi, 6-2, 6-4, while both Aysiega and David played to 6-4, 6-4 sets in their matches.
