Softball: Cerritos scores 30 runs in conference win

On Thursday, the Cerritos College softball team scored the second most runs in school history, as they defeated ECC Compton Center, 30-1. The win improves the Falcons record to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. It also marks the second most runs scored in a game in school history, as they team recorded a 35-0 win over San Diego City College in 1998. The team will now travel to College of the Canyons on Saturday for a doubleheader, with the first game getting underway at noon.

Cerritos failed to score in the top of the first inning, while Compton (0-10, 0-3) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the stanza. After scoring a pair of runs in the top of the second inning when freshman first baseman Kylee Brown (Mayfair HS) led off with a double and moved to third base on a single by sophomore shortstop Raquel Norzagaray (Pioneer HS). On a double steal, Brown came home with Norzagaray advancing to second base and then scored on a base hit up the middle by sophomore pitcher Jenny Navarro (Warren HS).

The game was put out of reach with a school record 25 runs in the top of the third inning on just 14 hits. Compton committed six errors in the inning and eight on the day. Cerritos finished the game with 23 hits.

In the inning, 13 different players drove in at least one run, with two runs coming in when batter were hit by pitches with the bases loaded, along with a bases loaded walk. The quartet of Norzagaray, sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Kutzke (Los Alamitos HS/University of Montana), freshman outfielder Kimberly Olivas (Warren HS) and freshman catcher Stephanie Chuc (El Rancho HS) all drove in a pair of runs with base hits in the inning, with Norzagaray, Kutzke and Chuc finising the inning with three RBI.

Freshman outfielder Nathalie Mendia (South Gate HS) came off the bench to got 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Navarro finished the day 4-for-6 with three runs and three RBI, as well as earning the win in the circle. She tossed three innings and struck out six batter, with freshman Kristen Voller (Norco HS) recording five strikeouts in two innings of work.

Kutzke (2-for-3, three runs, three RBI), Brown (3-for-3, three runs, two RBI), Norzagaray (3-for-4, three runs, three RBI) all had good games, as did sophomore catcher Jesseca Martinez (Lakewood HS), who went 2-for-3 with five runs scored.
