Propelled by a five-run first inning, the Cerritos College softball team recorded an 8-0 win in six innings against Ventura College at Nancy Kelly Field on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons (3-0) will host Cypress College in a 2:00 p.m. non-conference on Friday.

Three walks, a hit batter and a bases-clearing double accounted for the team's runs in the first inning. After sophomore outfielder Kimberly Olivas (Warren HS) was hit by a pitch to lead off the stanza, sophomore shortstop Erica Guzman (Enoch HS/William Jessup University) doubled her home for the first run. Walks to sophomore outfielder Jissel Caballero (Warren HS) and freshman first baseman Anika Ortiz (Ocean View HS) loaded the bases for freshman catcher Rain Vega (La Mirada HS). She drew a full count walk, which forced in another run.

The big hit of the inning was a three-run double into left-centerfield by freshman outfielder Emma Wolff (Mayfair HS), which gave the Falcons and sophomore starting pitcher Kristen Voller (Norco HS) a comfortable 5-0 lead.

Voller (3-0), who tossed the first three innings, allowed just one hit, before freshman Carly Gutierrez (Santa Fe HS) came on to pitch the next two innings. She surrendered a pair of hits, while Caballero allowed one hit in her one inning for work.

The game ended after six innings when Ortiz doubled home freshman outfielder Briana Lopez (Norwalk HS), who led off the inning with a walk and moved to second base on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, sophomore second baseman Kylee Brown (Mayfair HS) singled in the final run.

On the day, Cerritos collected one hit from six different players, while drawing five walks and were hit by two pitches.
