Although they won, 8-0 against ECC Compton Center on Thursday at Nancy Kelly Field, the Cerritos College softball team did most of their damage in the final two innings. The Falcons (14-7, 2-1) led 1-0 heading into the fifth inning, but scored seven runs in the next two innings for their 6-inning mercy rul win. They will now travel to Orange Coast College on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. non-conference game.

The team's 1-0 lead came thanks to a towering leadoff solo home run from freshman catcher Briana Lopez (Norwalk HS), her second of the season. Cerritos left the bases loaded in the third inning, but came to life their third time through the batting order.

In the fifth inning, sophomore outfielder Kimberly Olivas (Warren HS) singled and stole second base, with sophomore pitcher Jissel Caballero (Warren HS) dropping a double inside the left field line for an RBI. Sophomore first baseman Kylee Brown (Mayfair HS) followed with a two-run home run for a 4-0 lead. Caballero also improved to 5-0 in the circle with her two-hit shutout, while striking out seven batters.

In the game-ending sixth inning, freshman Carly Gutierrez (Santa Fe HS) led off with a walk, followed by a pinch-hit single by freshman Tatyana Peko (La Habra HS) and a base hit from freshman second baseman Emma Wolff (Mayfair HS), which loaded the bases. With two outs, Brown drove them all in with a grand slam, which marked the second game in a row that she hit a pair of home runs. She is now tied for fifth in the state with seven home runs, while her 32 RBI are tied for third in the state.
