Although they split their two games on Saturday, the Cerritos College softball team did see sophomore infielder Kylee Brown (Mayfair HS) take over the state lead in home runs. The Falcons (17-8) opened the day with an 8-0, 5-inning win over Southwestern College, and were then defeated, 10-2 in six innings against Grossmont College. The team will resume South Coast Conference play on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. when they host Long Beach City College.

Cerritos vs. Southwestern: Brown, who now has 11 round-trippers on the season, hit her 10th in the second inning, which put the Falcons in front, 7-0. They scored four times in the top of the first inning, with sophomore outfielder Kimberly Olivas (Warren HS) and sophomore pitcher Jissel Caballero (Warren HS) drawing walks to start the game. Brown, who ranks second in the state with 45 RBI, singled to load the bases, with the first two runs coming home on fielder's choice plays by both catcher Briana Lopez (Norwalk HS) and third baseman Rain Vega (La Mirada HS). An error brought in the third run, while freshman outfielder Lesley Briseno (Cypress HS) doubled home the fourth run.

Brown's two-run home run in the second inning came right after a Caballero double, which plated Olivas. Caballero improved to 6-0 in the circle when she tossed the five-inning shutout and struck out three batters while allowing five hits. Cerritos scored their seven runs on just four hits, as Southwestern committed five errors, while the Falcons drew six walks.

Cerritos vs. Grossmont: The early inning runs continued for the Falcons, as they scored their lone two runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Brown and Lopez hit back-to-back solo home runs. However, the Griffins would get to a trip of Cerritos pitchers and score three times in the second inning, twice in the third and three more in the fourth. They ended the game early on a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Caballero (6-1) gave on three runs (one earned) in two innings of work, while freshman Carly Gutierrez (Santa Fe HS) was charged with five earned runs in one inning. Sophomore Kristen Voller (Norco HS) also pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up two runs (one earned). The Griffins also out-hit the Falcons, 13-5.
