For the third time in his career, Cerritos College women's track and field coach Michael Allen has been named the state's Coach of the Year for that sport. He also received the award in 2006 and 2008, which coincided with the women's track and field team also winning the CCCAA State Championship. He also also been named the South Coast Conference Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year nine times. The Falcons set a new state record in 2017 with their 149.5 team points, which led them to their third straight state championship and sixth in the last 12 years. Allen and the Falcons also won the title in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

In addition to helping the team win their third straight state championship, Allen guided the team to their third straight Southern California championship and fifth South Coast Conference championship in a row. On the year, the Falcons won nine individual state championships, which include five separate best marks in the state in 100-meter HH, triple jump and heptathlon (Juanita Webster), while Amber Hart posted the best distance in the shot put and Mystasia Alexander recorded the state's best javelin throw this season.

In his 18 years with the Falcons, Allen's athletes account for 24 of the school's 28 individual school record categories, with five of them coming in 2017. They also hold 132 of the 140 top five marks in the school's record books.
