Men's soccer opened the season with a 2-1 win over Rio Hondo

After falling behind in the first half, the Cerritos College men's soccer team responded with a pair of goal to post a 2-1 win over host Rio Hondo College on Wednesday. The Falcons (1-0-0) will now travel north to take part in the Hartnell Tournament over the weekend. They open with a 5:00 p.m. game against American River College.

The Roadrunners (0-1-0) opened the scoring in the 25th minute against sophomore goalkeeper Jaime Sanchez (Salesian HS). It took the Falcons 17 minutes to tie up the contest when freshman Christian Carrillo (Katella HS) received the ball and occupied two defenders until he noticed freshman Sebastian Velasquez (Hollywood HS) in the slot. A threaded pass reached Velasquez, who accounted for the team's first goal of the season when he found the bottom right corner.

Cerritos turned to their defense to hold off Rio Hondo in the second half, as they added six more shots to the nine they had in the first 45 minutes. Freshman Ivan Del Campo (Granada Hills Kennedy HS) turned away all six shots to earn the win on the day. Offensively, they took the lead in the 70th minute and maintained their tight defense to secure the victory. On the goal, freshman Steve Martinez (Salesian HS) collected the ball and fed a 30-yard pass to Carrillo, who calmly took on his player and then drilled a shot past Rio Hondo goalkeeper Aaron Martinez for the game-winner.
