The Cerritos College men's soccer team continued their hot start to the season, as they recorded three shutouts to win the Hartnell Tournament over the weekend. The Falcons (4-0-0) opened with a 3-0 win over American River College and then came back to post a 1-0 victory over Lake Tahoe Community College, which sent them to the finals. They completed the clean scoresheet with a 2-0 win against Fresno City College. Cerritos will get a week's rest until they travel to Oxnard College a week from Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference match.

Cerritos vs. American River: The Falcons were on the offensive throughout the game and posted 18 shots on goal against the #2-ranked team from Northern California last season. The Beavers were able to keep Cerritos from scoring in the first 45 minutes, but that ended five minutes into the second half, as sophomore Mario Guerrero (University HS) sent in a volley to freshman Edzon Cuevas (Animo HS), who broke the scoreless tie. That seemed to open things up for the Falcons, who added their second goal in the 64th minute when freshman Christian Carrillo (Katella HS) put the ball in the right spot for freshman Steve Martinez (Salesian HS) for his first goal of the season. The final tally came when Carrillo put away a shot after receiving a pass from sophomore Jose Ochoa (Paramount HS) late in the game. Freshman Ivan Del Campo (Kennedy HS) earned the shutout win and made a pair of saves.

Cerritos vs. Lake Tahoe CC: Expecting to face defending state champion Hartnell, the Falcons were required to play Lake Tahoe CC, who posted an upset win. The game was very physical against the Coyotes, who are re-starting their program. It was scoreless until right before the end of the first half when freshman Luis Montealegre (Niwot, CO HS) scored on a shot off his chest on a pass from sophomore Andy Ramirez (Southeast HS). Del Campo turned away three great scoring chances for Lake Tahoe in the second half, as the game remained physical until the final whistle. Del Campo earned his second shutout win in a row and posted nine saves.

Cerritos vs. Fresno City: Playing for the championship, the Falcon players were dedicating the tournament to Jasmine Cornejo, who played for the Cerritos women's team the last two seasons and passed away during the summer. In what turned out to be the game-winning goal came in the 30th minute when Cuevas took on two defenders and crossed the ball to an open Sebastian Velazquez (Hollywood HS), and the freshman chipped the ball into the net. The Falcons asserted their dominance with their depth and took a 2-0 lead when freshman Saratiel Campos (Golden Valley HS) made a great individual play and crossed the ball to an open Jesus Maciel (Coronado, NV HS) and he put the ball away. On the day, Cerritos outshot the Rams, 15-8 and Del Campo picked up his third shutout in as many days. Cuevas was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

According to head coach Benny Artiaga, "We did not allow a goal and got better every game. Very proud of our team and emotions were very high as a lot of these guys were friends with Jasmine and did not want to let her down. Edzon had a great first game and then was able to follow it up with two more games and was very deserving of the MVP award."
